Re-branding Our Business

You may have noticed all of the hubbub on our Facebook page this week announcing Mary + Roy – Coming Soon. That’s right, folks, Roy and I decided that we wanted to rename our business, refocus ourselves, and renew our look to match our aesthetic and our style.

It all started back in February when I was taking Jasmine Star’s reSTARt course on CreativeLIVE. One of the homework assignments was to go on a photo safari and take a picture of all of the things that you love, that inspire you, that speak to you. It’s an excellent exercise for finding your style and for branding that many graphic designers and brand coaches send their clients on. After I had finished my photos and put them all together I showed Roy. He smiled and said it was nice and very me. I looked at the board of images a few days later and realized there was not much to represent Roy in there. Then I looked at our website. And our blog. And our logo. And our name. It had been pretty much me since the beginning of things, with Roy being my assistant. But that’s not how we present ourselves and it’s not how we want everyone to think of us. As I was doing some site updates and reading through some notes that our past clients had written to us it hit me. Everyone refers to us as Mary & Roy so why are we not calling ourselves that? Duh.

We started our adventures in re-branding our business in March and it has been one hell of a ride. We gathered our inspiration, we’ve been planning photo shoots around our new look, and we are so excited to share with everyone! We’ve created something that fits Roy and I so much better and is just so us. We’ll be unveiling our new look very soon and we think you’re going to love it! Instead of Mary Meghan Photography we’ll be launching ourselves as a creative studio to house all of our photography and design work! Yay! Time to happy dance because our hard work is almost done! Here’s a little behind the scenes look of what we’ve been sharing on Instagram throughout this whole process:

Living a Life of Adventure {Project Life 365} – Week 4

As an artist with a creative mind it is often hard to keep your creativity from going stale, or from losing the spark in the things you love to do. Project Life 365 is a photo-a-day project that breathes life back into your creativity and provides inspiration and community. I’ve started 365 projects before and the longest one I ever kept up with was a whopping 43 days (amazing, I know). Project Life 365 is more about keeping a spark of adventure in my life, even on days where I’m spending countless hours sitting in front of a computer inside my home running our business. Not every day is glamorous, but there are special moments in every day that deserve to be appreciated.

Photography: Laura and Danny’s Chinatown and Lower Manhattan Engagement Session || Manhattan, NYC, NY

Laura and Danny are a hilarious and sweet couple who are getting married at the gorgeous Reeves-Reed Arboretum later this year. We met up in Chinatown over the weekend for their engagement session. We hit up all of their favorite spots and hung around the park where they both spend a lot of time. What I love about shooting in a more urban setting than we normally do is all of the fantastic architecture and textures you can find! Roy and I even managed to find a bit of greenery. We loved hanging out with Laura and Danny, who are adorable goofballs! They even showed us one of their favorite places to eat and got a tasty snack. Laura and Danny we can’t wait to shoot your wedding! Thanks for making your chinatown and lower manhattan engagement session so fun!

Photography: Loreen and Mike’s Philadelphia Art Museum Proposal and Engagement Session || Philadelphia, PA

When Christen told me that her brother Michael was planning to surprise Loreen and propose to her I started to get really excited. Shooting a proposal has been on my photo bucket list for a long time and Roy and I are so glad that we were able to help Mike surprise Loreen and capture the amazing moment for them. Mike planned everything out so well – he made dinner reservations to celebrate with their families afterwards, he picked out the ring, and he made sure to bring Loreen to one of her favorite spots. Loreen told us that her friend is a family friend of Steven Singer (what a family friend to have, right?), and that her and her friend got to spend an afternoon sipping wine and picking out rings they liked. Even though there was forecasts for severe thunderstorms, and Mike and I were back and forth a few times on the phone, nothing was stopping this Philadelphia Art Museum proposal! Luckily, the weather behaved.

Roy and I were in full on sniper mode, complete with dorky hand signals. I even gave Roy a backstory about how he was an art student taking pictures of the museum’s architecture if he needed to reposition himself for a better angle around Mike and Loreen. I don’t think Loreen even noticed us though, her focus was totally on Mike and as soon as he dropped down to one knee she was so happy! I asked her if she even said yes and she laughed and told me that she didn’t think she said anything, she just held her hand out so he could put the ring on! The great thing about Mike getting us involved to capture the memories of his epic proposal to Loreen is that we were able to do engagement pictures for them right afterwards and there was nothing stopping their happiness – I barely had to tell them what to do at all, they were both just so adorable and elated the whole time!

We can’t say it enough – Mike and Loreen we are so happy for you! Congratulations and thank you so much for letting us be a part of this amazing memory!

I felt pretty great about the first week, I love the daily prompts and I am actually taking the time to be more creative with my interpretation of them. One of my photos was even featured on the @projectlife365 instagram, how rad is that?!

Photography: Megan and Johnnie’s Red Bank Fair and Count Basie Theatre Engagement Session || Red Bank, NJ

I’m going to start this post off with a confession: I want to marry Megan and Johnnie as a couple. I absolutely love them, and we had so much fun meeting them for the first time and hanging out with them for their engagement pictures in Red Bank, NJ! They are a super sweet, theater loving couple who have infectious laughter – good luck keeping a straight face when you’re hanging out with them! My cheeks hurt from smiling so much while we shot their engagement pictures! Red Bank is the cutest little town near the Jersey Shore and it is so perfect for an engagement session, there is some fantastic architecture, and there was a street fair over the weekend! Megan and Johnnie have planned their wedding next month with Pretty Little Details, so Roy and I were totally spoiled because Laura from Pretty Little Details took care of all of the details for us and hung out with us during Megan and Johnnie’s photo shoot. We have two couples that are planning their weddings with PLD this year and we are loving working with Jennifer and her team!

Megan and Johnnie wanted to have their engagement session at the Count Basie Theatre, since theater is so close to their hearts, so after we walked around the street fair we ended their engagement pictures at the Count Basie, which is a gorgeous theater that was recently renovated. As we were shooting pictures of Megan and Johnnie they told us about how Johnnie had proposed to Megan. He wanted to surprise her, so he planned out with the cast of the play they were in to propose to her during a dress rehearsal. As they were running lines together in a scene about a girl getting married Johnnie threw in a little improv, telling Megan that she wasn’t going to marry the man in the play, because she was going to Marry him! Megan was confused and only paying attention to the lines in her book when she realized that Johnnie was down on one knee. We loved hearing them tell the story for us!

Photography: Dana and Max’s Spring Cherry Blossom Engagement Session || Newark, NJ

When Roy and I met Max and Dana I just about died over their engagement story. Dana and Max are one of those couples who seem like they’ve been together forever. Well, in their case, they have! They have pictures together as teenagers from when they met in high school, and their love literally hits you in the face when you’re around them. When Max proposed to Dana he filled a room with balloons and from the strings he hung love notes to Dana. I’ll pause there for a moment for all of the girls reading this to do a girly sigh.

For their engagement session we had quite an adventure. We went to Branchbrook Park, which holds the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in New Jersey. After hearing about their engagement story we had to include balloons for their engagement pictures, and Roy and I really love to make engagement sessions with our couples special by planning them around a couple’s story. As we made our way through the crowd of people who came out for the cherry blossom festival over the weekend we got really nerdy and talked about our obsessions over Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, and a Lord of the Rings reference even made it in there. And we got really excited when we found the perfect tree to take their cherry blossom engagement pictures at!

We went to explore the huge park some more and found a great field and the yummiest light. My favorite thing about engagement pictures are when we can get to a quiet spot and I can just tell a couple to hold each other and see how each couple will interpret that differently. And what I love even more? How in love you can see that they are!

Dana and Max are getting married next year at one of our favorite venues, the Crossed Keys Inn and we can not wait to celebrate with them!
